Civic Education & Media Literacy

Voices That Move Communities to Action

Inara Communications makes animated civic education that people can actually follow — in Kiswahili, Sheng' and English, with Kenyan Sign Language interpretation and subtitles built into the film itself, not bolted on afterwards.

About Us

Communication that Crosses Every Boundary

A Nairobi-based civic communication firm working on a specific problem: information about democracy is usually produced in a register most people do not use, and in a format many people cannot access.

Our films are short, animated, and set in ordinary places — a bedroom, a bus stop, a pool hall. Seven of the twelve carry a Kenyan Sign Language interpreter on screen throughout, and every one is subtitled, so the work holds up on a muted phone in a crowded room.

🎯 Inform

Verified civic and media-literacy content delivered as story, not instruction.

🤝 Engage

Characters and settings drawn from the everyday places these conversations happen.

⚡ Empower

Every film ends on a decision the viewer can actually make.

🤟 Include

Sign language and subtitles designed in from the start, never retrofitted.

What We Do

Full-Spectrum Civic Communication

From single-idea animated explainers to multi-language campaign libraries.

🎨

Animated Civic Education

Short-form 2D animation that explains one idea clearly — verifying a message, recognising hate speech, understanding a right — in the language and register the audience actually speaks.

🔍

Media & Information Literacy

Campaigns that build the habit of checking a claim before sharing it. Our library covers source verification, rumour spread, and how to tell official election information from imitation.

🤟

Sign Language & Accessible Formats

Kenyan Sign Language interpretation delivered as an on-screen inset, plus burned-in subtitles, so a film works with the sound off, on a shared phone, or for a Deaf viewer — without a separate edit.

🕊️

Peace & Tolerance Messaging

Pre- and post-election content on de-escalation, refusing to amplify hostile messaging, and accepting results — including the difficult conversation about a candidate who lost.

🌍

Multilingual Localisation

Productions built to be re-voiced and re-subtitled. Our current library runs in Kiswahili, Sheng', and English, with the animation designed so further language tracks do not require reanimation.

📰

Press Freedom & Rights Content

Explainers on journalists' rights and freedom of expression, framed for general audiences rather than for newsrooms.

Check and Verify the Message

Angalia na Uthibitishe Ujumbe

A young man forwards a message without checking it. A step-by-step look at how to trace a claim back to its source before passing it on.

Think Before Sharing

What happens after you hit share. The film follows a rumour as it travels, and shows the moment where it could have been stopped.

Confronting Gender Stereotypes

Kukabili Mitazamo ya Kijinsia

Challenging the assumptions that shape how women candidates and voters are described, judged, and reported on.

Campaign Against Hate Speech

Kampeni Dhidi ya Jumbe za Chuki

How hostile messaging escalates during a campaign season, and the practical choices ordinary people can make to refuse to amplify it.
